A new viewpoint is open on Highway 138 in eastern Douglas County that offers views of Mt. Thielsen, Mt. Bailey and, of course, Diamond Lake.

The grand opening dedication was complete with a ribbon-cutting ceremony on the overlook by Miss Douglas County Outstanding Teen Julia Kehoe.

''We're here celebrating a new site that has just been added to the Rogue-Umpqua National Scenic Byway, and it's the Diamond Lake Viewpoint,'' said Cheryl Caplan of the Umpqua National Forest.

Caplan says the new Diamond Lake Viewpoint is ready for the public to enjoy, just past the Diamond Lake entrance.

''We would encourage anybody to come up here to see the site, it's great. Diamond Lake Viewpoint has a couple restrooms, picnic tables, interpretive signs with geology and from here, when the mountains are out, you can see Mount Thielsen, Mount Bailey and also Diamond Lake.''

The Friday afternoon ceremony celebrated the turning over of the viewpoint to the Umpqua National Forest from the Federal Highway Commission.

The new wayside is for daytime use only and it's just past milepost 79 on the north side of Highway 138.
