Boy safe after kidnapping in The Dalles, police say
THE DALLES, Ore. – A man kidnapped a young boy and set off an Amber Alert on Wednesday morning in The Dalles after attacking the boy’s parents, police said.
Officers found Brian L. Depriest, 36, and the child, Skylar Meldin Coulcer-Jarding, in the small town of Dufur, 15 miles south of The Dalles, said Capt. Ed Goodman of the Dalles Police Department.
Police said Depriest broke into a home early Wednesday morning and snatched the five-year-old boy. During the kidnapping, police said Depriest also assaulted the boy’s mother and father with a hammer.
The parents, Josh Jarding and Kathryn Riter, were injured in the attack. They were taken to a nearby hospital but were released by noon.
Police said Depriest is Riter’s ex-boyfriend and that she had a restraining order out against him.
After grabbing the boy, police said Depriest got into a stolen Chevy Cavalier and drove away with the boy in a stolen car.
"It was the car of a neighbor who was running it in the driveway to clear the windows of frost," Goodman said.
Detectives immediately started calling Depriest's relatives, many of whom live in Dufur, and one of them directed police to a family member's home, where Depriest was arrested without incident.
The Amber Alert was canceled around 8:30 a.m.
Neighbor Miranda Hendricks lives across the street from Riter and her family. She said she heard yelling and screaming in the morning but didn’t see anything when she looked.
“I’m actually really horrified by it, to be completely honest, it being right across the street from my house,” Hendricks said.
Kim Johnson knows Depriest and said his actions were out of character.
“Brian is not a bad guy,” she said. “He’s not violent, so I don’t understand.
Johnson said Depriest had played a role in raising Skylar, although lately there has been tension between Depriest and family, leading to the restraining order.
“He was distraught about not being able to see the kid,” Johnson said. “Something happened to get him riled up."
Depriest worked at Precision Lumber Co. in The Dalles for the past three years and was a "great employee," manager Matt McCall said.
"This has been quite a shock," he added. "It's a tough one for us."

a hammer?! glad he's safe.don't usually hear of happy endings
Good he was found safe. Assaulting with a hammer is a little dramatic. If just goes to show you with or without guns there will still be crimes.
Glad he was recovered, but a hammer was used in the assault????

You're welcome, Stacie! I'm glad the FBI made this app available, but I just hope I never have to use it. You're welcome, KPIC! The use of social media to find people is a great thing. These parents now have their child back safe with them where he belongs. Thank you KPIC for posting this story quickly and accurately.
Thank you, Lord. Amber alerts help so much. I am so happy to hear that he was found shortly after he went missing, I wish every person that went missing was this easy to find. I hope the SOB that took him rots in prison; any person that abducts children deserve anything bad coming to them, because they are sick individuals.
Thank GOD!!!
Thank you jesus!!

Thank You for Sharing the Fbi Child Id,
I also got a loud horn type alert that scared me and then a text message instructing me to go to my local news channel but there wss nothing on...FB WAS MY NEXT CHOICE@ And i found it! Hopefully this little boy will be safe at home in his warm bed tonight...
My Mom did on her android, but I didn't on my iPhone. I wonder if iPhone users can't; I signed up for amber alerts to be sent to my phone.
The Amber Alert was not as effective as it should have been. The emergency sound came in quietly which I thought was a little strange. There were no words displayed on the screen and I had to turn my TV up all the way to hear it. I almost thought it was just a test until I didn't see any words. I had to have everyone in the house be completely still and quiet but by then I had already missed a good portion of the message. Can you please contact someone who can remedy this problem or let me know who I can contact?
@Maleeyarose88 We can get this information to the engineers for sure! Can you email this to us at kpic4news@kpic.com.

@KPIC.com Web Team Yes...thank you so much!!!
Did anyone else get a LOUD amber alert on their phone about this? It really scared me! It came as a notification like a text message. I did not sign up for it or anything. Great way to use technology! I hope they find him :-(
Prayers that he is found soon and returned home safe!
I hope he gets home safe, prayers going out for this little guy and his two parents who were hurt.such sick people out there.lets sll stay positive for a safe return for him
I wanna know why they were so determined to get this little boy. It seems to me like this was all planned out. I just pray that they find him soon and that when they do they find him safe. I downloaded the FBI child ID app on my iPhone for this kind of reason. It gives you a spot to put all of the information about kids and it gives you information on what to do and who to call if your kids are abducted. Everyone with an iPhone and kids should have this app just in case. There's also child ID kids that people can get. Better safe than sorry.
Hope they find soon, safe and sound!
He is 5, the original release said 2. It should be corrected now. Thanks!
Is he 2 or 5? The article says both
