Vancouver police search for couple accused of taking baby

VANCOUVER, Wash. -- Vancouver Police are asking for help locating a couple that allegedly absconded with their five-month-old son who was in protective custody.

It happened on Nov. 27.

Acting on a court order, Child Protective Services in Washington had taken custody of Jaxon Smith when his father, Kasey McKernan, assaulted the CPS worker, grabbed the child and fled in a car driven by Summer Smith.

They fled in a black 1996 Chevrolet S-10 pickup truck bearing Washington License Plate "A11272U." In the afternoon Thursday, police announced they had found the pickup, but they did not say where.

Police say that criminal charges are pending against the couple.

Smith is 36. McKernan is 31.

Meanwhile, police arrested 33-year-old Michael Grant Fuller on Thursday, saying he assisted Smith and McKernan in kidnapping the baby. He was booked into the Clark County Jail.

He faces charges of kidnapping and rendering criminal assistance in connection to the case.

Police say detectives are still following leads related to people who are helping Smith and McKernan. They say they think there will be more arrests related to this case.

The FBI is assisting in the case.

Late Thursday night, Vancouver police announced the arrests of seven more people. Police arrested them on outstanding warrants and drug charges after they contacted them during the search for the suspects and the baby.

Those arrested are:

  • Ashlynd Delaplaine, 21
  • Eric L. Gross, 43
  • Russell Majerus, 25
  • Timothy Duke, 43
