Cougar kills emu, injures mini donkey

NORTH BEND, Ore. - As Paul and Donna Carlson slept only 100 feet away, a cougar came onto their property and attacked their animals.

They didn't hear a thing as the cat hurt their miniature donkey Ivy and killed their emu Fred.

"He was a pet, and I'm gonna miss him dearly," Donna told KCBY News.

From the aftermath, the Carlsons think the cat attacked Fred by the barn and dragged his body along the fence.

A trapper caught the cougar when it came back for the rest of the carcass.

While the Carlsons said they don't wish harm on any animal, even the cougar, they were relieved the animal was captured and destroyed.

"Once these cougars take livestock, they can't do anything else but put them down, track them and put them down, because they will continue to come back after the livestock because it's an easy meal," Donna said.

Jim Cegar lives next door and has two dogs and a horse on his property. He's relieved the cougar is no longer living in the neighborhood.

"I was going out in the middle of the night with my gun," Cegar said, "because if it's that close, you never know."
