EUGENE, Ore. - Firefighters found a body while responding to a house fire early Wednesday morning.

Eugene-Springfield Fire responded to a house fire in the 2000 block of Elk Avenue at 12:36 a.m. Wednesday.

While fighting the fire, crews located a person dead in the home. Police officers responded along with firefighters and posted red "crime scene" tape around the home.

Forensic investigators and detectives remained on scene through the day with fire officials and police.

Chris Bell lives across the street from the home. He says his neighbor called 911.

"He saw some crazy lights that lit up his whole room and he thought 'that's strange'," Bell says. "He goes to look outside and he heard a blast and explosion, and looks over suddenly. The whole house has got this flame coming through it."

Bell and other neighbors told reporters on scene that the homeowner is an older man that lives by himself.

"Definietly an impressive scene. This is a dead-end street, we don't have a lot of action here. Suddenly, there's like 25 cars here at like 12-midnight."

Bell says the homeowners nextdoor neighbor told him that he thought he heard gunshots.

"His neighbor on the other side said he heard a couple shots and thought what's going on?" he says. "Who's shooting off a gun at 12:30?"

Bell says the details just don't add up.

"The car leaving late at night. the fire starting. The shots... then to have the crime scene investigation with the red tape, it's clear to us that something more is going on."

Investigators are working to determine the identity of the deceased, the cause of death and the cause of the fire.
