POWERS, Ore. -- A 17-year-old was not wearing her seat belt Saturday afternoon when she drove off of Highway 542 and hit a tree near the Coquille Myrtle Grove State Park, state police officials said.
The woman, identified as Minerva Neri, 17, of Myrtle Point, was pronounced dead at the scene.
Officials said it was around noon Saturday when Neri's Honda Accord drifted off the roadway and struck a large tree. Troopers are working with Coos Bay Area Command to find out what caused her to drive off the road, however they said they think high speed was a factor.
The crash partially blocked north and southbound traffic about 8 miles north of Powers, Oregon Department of Transportation officials said.
