COOS BAY, Ore. - Divers recovered the body of an 8-year-old boy who went underwater at Upper Empire Lakes in John Topits Park, the Coos Bay fire department said.

Karistian Croy of Coos Bay disappeared beneath the surface after 3 p.m.

"Heard the mother shout - there were three kids, two came back to shore - 'He didn't come up, he didn't come up,'" said witness Mark Guzzard.

Police, firefighters, a Coast Guard helicopter and citizens searched the waters before divers from the Lakeside Fire Department found his body just before 7 p.m.

"This really is a tragedy," said Stan Gibson, Coos Bay fire chief. "Our hearts go out to the family, and this is just a solemn reminder that we live in an area that has a lot of water, and people need to practice as much precaution as they can."
