Man accused of putting dog in hot oven appears in court

SALEM, Ore. – A 20-year-old Lyons, Ore. man accused of beating a 6-year-old Chihuahua and putting it in a heated oven appeared in in Marion County court Tuesday afternoon.
Kevin Parrish is charged with aggravated animal abuse.
But even if he’s convicted of that crime, a felony, Parrish won’t face prison time, according to the Animal League Defense Fund, an organization pushing for stronger penalties in animal abuse cases.
“The problem is in Oregon, the judge’s real authority is based on sentencing guidelines,” said Clatsop County District Attorney and Animal League Defense Fund board member Josh Marquis. “Even if a person in theory had multiple violent felony convictions, the maximum sentence a judge would be able to give them under Oregon law would be 60 days in jail, not a prison sentence.”
The judge denied Parrish’s request to be released from jail Tuesday. Bail was set at $100,000.
"Even if the judge wants to, he can't send them to prison," said Marquis.
Marion County sheriff’s deputies said Parrish was watching the 9-pound dog, Kudo, for his grandmother, who was out of state.
Parrish told deputies he got angry on Friday after Kudo nipped him, so he grabbed the dog and started punching him in the head. Deputies said Parrish also admitted to trying to strangle Kudo, according to a news release from the Marion County Sheriff's Office.
Parrish told investigators he then decided to put the dog in the oven, which was preheated to cook food at 350 degrees, deputies said.
“Parrish said he was prepared to leave him there, but he suddenly heard his brother coming into the house,” the news release said.
Parrish' brother and father rescued Kudo and took him to a veterinarian. Three of Kudo's legs were badly burned, his hair was singed and he had cuts and bruises, deputies said.
Parrish, who has no criminal record, admitted to deputies that he has anger issues and snapped when dealing with the dog.
Parrish's father is taking care of Kudo and the dog will continue receiving care at the vet clinic.

I hope he gets help because if he loses his temper for something so minor, what will he do when life deals him a bad hand. It is scary to think there are so many people like this Parrish guy out there.

Makes me angry when I saw this on the news! He needs jail time! They need to make animal abuse a very bad crime! Poor innocent animal.
He wont spend much time in jail for what he did and you waite this person will be the next serial killer. All serial killers start out killing animals and work their way up. I pray to God that this person will get the crap beating out of him when hes in jail. They should treat people like him the same way they treat pedifiles. Pets are like family and they depend on us to keep them safe.
Remember just last year a Roseburg couple were sentenced to jail time for animal abuse - Kudos to the judge that handed that sentence out. This sicko needs to be stopped before he goes on to seriously harm again, it could be a human next time!

Grrrr!!! This stuff just makes me so mad!! He needs to feel what that poor dog felt. It has been proven that kids or people who are abusive to animals are likely to do the same to humans. There needs to be major consequences to this kind of crime. My heart goes out to his Grandma who had to come home to that. :(

Sick miserable person, should be in prison for life and kept away from polite society, what next a human baby or some other terrible offense to a child. The animal is just the beginning. This should not be ignored and treated lightly. Sadly even if it were a person the punishment would not be severe enough, our legal system is a mess.

Even when convicted the jails let these people out. A cull got 18 months for breaking into storage sheds and my son lost everything including U.S.M.C. belongings and souvenirs from Iraq. He was let out in THREE months. It's as if they are sending out the signal for vigilante justice. Anyone who would put a dog in an oven deserves to be caned - in public. Child and animal abuse is incomprehensible and perhaps it's time.........

Unless he is evaluated and treated he won 't have a chance of a somewhat normal life. It is true that most animal abuser end up doing lethal crimes. Jail is fine but he needs treatment and supervision.

Screw prison. Prison will do nothing but create a much worse criminal. He needs to be put to work. Something humanely torturous and yet something where the community can benefit. A few years of supervised community service at the local animal shelter or somewhere else useful. Of course the way Oregon's budget has been lately, stick him in prison and he will be released a few weeks later. On another note. I hope most of you are only half serious about sticking him in the oven. What he did was horrific, but you are really are ok with walking him into an oven and cooking him alive? Whether you feel it is justified or not, that wouldn't make you any better than him.

Yes it should be jail time. It is a proven fact that psychopaths and serial killers start with small animals.
I think that at the very least the behavior needs to be addressed and his issues looked into.
