CRATER LAKE, Ore. (AP) — Early snow at Crater Lake has closed Rim Drive and the North Entrance to the park.

Park superintendent Craig Ackerman says as of Tuesday morning about 16 inches of snow have fallen since the storm blew in Sunday. That is about four times the average for this time of year.

Snowplows keep the South Entrance open all winter, and Ackerman says that even without this snow, the North Entrance and Rim Drive were set to close Nov. 1 so park staff could get the park "buttoned up for winter." Crater Lake gets 30 to 60 feet of snow a year.

Forecasts call for snow to continue at higher elevations through Wednesday.
