SUTHERLIN, Ore. -- Sutherlin police made a sad discovery today, finding the bodies of a deceased elderly male and his caretaker in a home.
The family of an elderly man said they were unable to contact either he or his caretaker, so police went to the residence in the 1100 block of Central Avenue.
When police arrived on scene, they found both the man and his caretaker dead.
According to officials on scene, the female caretaker had passed away from natural causes.
The patient, who police say suffered from dementia, was unable to get help and died shortly thereafter.
Police say the sad discovery serves as a reminder for people to check in on their loved ones. Sgt. Justin Marquis of the Sutherlin Police Department told KPIC News, "If you have anybody in those kinds of situations, be sure you check up on them if they're independent or semi-dependent," he said. "Make sure that family members check in at least once, twice a day."
The elderly man did have two dogs who survived, and Marquis says family members will take care of the animals.
Police have not released the identity of the two people.
