GOLD BEACH, Ore. (AP) — The treasurer of the Gold Beach Senior Center surrendered to authorities at the Curry County Jail after she was indicted on charges that she stole money from the organization.
The World newspaper of Coos Bay reports that 70-year-old Marlyn Schafer was charged with aggravated first-degree theft, which is a theft of more than $10,000.
Schafer is a former mayor of Gold Beach and was a county commissioner from 2001 to 2008.
The Gold Beach Police Department said Friday the investigation began after the board of the senior center discovered financial irregularities in June 2014.
The center conducted an internal review and gave the information to investigators.
