Fishing Derby kicks off with kids getting wet
DOUGLAS COUNTY, Ore. -- The annual Fish Derby started off Wednesday with a new event.
Students from Phoenix School went to the Rock Creek Fish Hatchery in Idleyld Park for some hands-on knowledge.
Not only did the kids get to learn about fish from the experts, but they also got the chance to get into the water and see the fish up close and personal.
Hatchery officials say it's a unique experience, and the students take a lot away from the day. "I think it's important that we pass on our knowledge and skills to the next generation," said Dan Meyer, the hatchery manager. "We look forward to that opportunity. It helps them out, helps us out also, so it's kind of a win-win thing."
The fishing derby has been a Douglas County tradition for 20 years, but this is the first time organizers have taken kids to the hatchery for an educational look at fish.
Derby committee member Dave Loomis said, "The educators seriously have said that kids can learn better when they can get outside, get hands on with the subjects and the animals, in this case that they're learning about in the watersheds. So, that's really what it's all about."
All of the students were outfitted with chest waiters thanks to Cabela's.
Wednesday's fish derby day was a special event, the Rock Creek Fish Hatchery is still closed to the public during construction.
