Head-on crash closes road south of Roseburg

ROSEBURG, Ore. -- At least two people were injured Friday morning in a serious head-on crash on Happy Valley Road in the Green District.

According to officials at the scene a small pickup and a passenger car crashed just before 9:30 a.m. at the 600 block of Happy Valley Road.

Robert Mudrow, a 72-year-old Roseburg man, was driving the Dodge pickup when he crossed the center lane into oncoming traffic where he ran into a 2009 Hundai driven by 76-year-old Roseburg resident Shirley Ann Wilson.

The impact sent the pickup into the air before it rolled several times, an on-scene witness told KPIC. The pickup rolled down a bank and stopped in the ditch on the south side of the road.

Wilson's Hundai stopped facing sideways in the middle of the road with heavy front end damage.

Mudrow was taken to Mercy Medical Center where he was pronounced dead after arrival. Wilson was flown by helicopter ambulance to Sacred Heart Hospital in Eugene with serious injuries.

Ken Steller, a vendor at a local flea market, says he was talking to a customer and witnessed the crash. "Once they hit, the pickup truck went straight up in the air and completed a roll, smashed it, then it rolled three times into the culdesac down here," he said.

Happy Valley Road was closed while accident re-constructionists were called to the scene.

Heath Howington, a Douglas County Sheriff's deputy, told KPIC News, "It appears that possibly, the pickup that rolled down the bank may have crossed over in front of this other vehicle and she swerved to miss."

According to Howington, Wilson was conscious at the scene. She was wearing her seat belt, Mudrow was not. Investigators are still looking into the cause of the crash.

Douglas County Fire District #2 and the Douglas County Sheriff's office responded to the crash.
