Health Dept: Gonorrhea on the rise in Douglas County

DOUGLAS COUNTY, Ore. -- Gonorrhea has been on the rise in Douglas County.

According to the Douglas County Health Department, they typically see two cases of the STD each year.

In 2013, Douglas County had a reported 23 cases, and since the first of 2014, health officials say they have already seen 9.

Dawnelle Marshall, the Public Health Division Director, says it isn't just our county. "It has been up across the State of Oregon, primarily in the Interstate 5 corridor counties, but even here as we've started 2014, we are up to 9 cases."

Marshall says that so far these cases seem to stem from indiscriminate partner choices.

She says the best way to prevent the spread of the disease is by using a condom and being tested.
