ROSEBURG, Ore. -- The library director for many years has shelved his last book.

Max Leek has retired.

In his place, retired librarian Louise Hughes is temporarily taking the reins.

Hughes worked at the Douglas County library for three decades.

She started this week, and says that she's mostly just taking care of the day to day stuff, but adds that she also has hopes for the library's future. "My long term goal is to find a way that we can get funding for the library, so that we can reinstate the services that we provided, and maybe even provide better services," she said.

Hughes isn't quite sure how she wants to generate funding, but she believes it's a necessity.

She adds that she hopes to see services and hours restored to what they were before the cuts.

Hughes will hold the job until a permanent director is hired.
