'It goes to show you that kids can be very generous'

WINCHESTER, Ore. -- A local girl scout troop, like many others, have been selling their famous cookies for a fundraiser, and the local animal shelter benefited over the weekend.

Girl Scout Troop 30610, marched into the Saving Grace Pet Adoption Center this weekend, with a much needed donation for the facility.

They've donated $200 worth of their cookie sales to the center.

Michelle Torvik, the troop leader, told KPIC News about how the donation can actually benefit the girls, just as much as the animals at the shelter. "Through Girl Scouts, we learn how to serve our community, so this is a great lesson for them," said Torvik.

Many of the scouts have pets of their own. so when they voted back in the fall to donate part of their cookie proceeds to a non-profit in Roseburg, helping animals just felt right.

Amy Nash, volunteer director at Saving Grace, says the things they brought to the facility were key to keeping the pets happy. "What they've done is, they've purchased some items that we need here at the shelter like pigs ears and things like that, treats for the dogs, as well as some cleaning supplies," Nash said.

Those cleaning supplies and pet food represent a few days worth of work, or what amounts to 300 boxes of cookies, according to Torvik. "I think, it goes to show you that kids can be very generous," she said.

While they were at Saving Grace, the little troopers got their hands dirty making pet treats, so that animals can truly feel at home.
