Landslide blocks main route from Eugene to Florence

Landslide blocks main route from Eugene to Florence

EUGENE, Ore. - Oregon Highway 126 between Eugene and Florence will likely remain closed until at least Friday afternoon.

A landslide between Walton and Mapleton in Lane County remains active, and crews can not safely attempt to clear the roadway of approximately 500 to 700 cubic yards of mud, rocks, trees and debris, the Oregon Department of Transportation said.

Geotechnical experts will assess the slide activity later Thursday.  Once it's determined to be safe, crews will begin removing the slide.

The detour for westbound motorists is north on Poodle Creek Road, then west on OR 36 to Mapleton, and then west on OR 126 to Florence.  Eastbound motorists will reverse the detour.

Heavy, wet snow currently is falling in the Coast Range in Lane County, creating additional treefalls and debris on the detour route.  Motorists are encouraged to delay travel between Eugene and Florence, if possible.  Otherwise motorists should be prepared for winter road conditions and anticipate delays.
