Man, 26, dies after being taken into custody
CANYONVILLE, Ore. -- Authorities are reporting that a man died shortly after being taken into custody by deputies, and the case is being investigated by the Douglas County Major Crimes Team.
Sheriff's deputies contacted Walter Ray McKelvey, 26, just before 9:00 p.m. on Sunday, at the Ray's Market in Canyonville.
Authorities say McKelvey was acting erratic and began to run in front of traffic.
As Deputies tried to take the man into custody, he reportedly struggled with deputies.
Investigators say that McKelvey experienced an unknown medical emergency shortly afterwards.
The investigation into his death is being handled by the Major Crimes Team, with the Roseburg Police Department being the lead agency.
The Douglas County Major Crimes Team is an interagency team comprised of members of the Douglas County Sheriff's Office, Oregon State Police, Roseburg Police Department and the Douglas County District Attorneys Office.
If he is already cuffed, and wants to kick, scream, and cuss....let him! Let him wear himself out, then pick him up and put him in the squad car! Like lil ole Canyonville, has there hands full...Please! Didn't need to taze him to death! You police are a bunch of control freaks!!!Â
No matter the situation, he lost his life and no one deserves that. RIP Walter.
A taz is a taz they don't say oh this guy is out of control we will give him high voltage if you comply you don't get tazed once again thank the cops for trying to stop him from hurting someone else

I have sat back and read all these comments about Walter and the police.. I myself have known Walter for about six years and have seen the good and bad in him.... Regardless of his past, He should not of had this happen to him... He was distraught,? sick,? or who knows what was going through his mind... There was no reason at all for him to be taized to that extreme..... I find it disturbing that the news and papers failed to mention the fact that he was taized at all and make it sound like he just had a medical condition...!!!!!!!
Every time kpic puts an article it becomes an argument of know it alls that don't know much. Small town bs.
Also..I almost hit this man with my car last night. The cops jumped out and stopped him.. putting them closer to my car. Bottom line, they tried to stop him from hurting himself and others and that's pretty important I would think.
Honestly, I would rather have the cops out there dealing with people who needed dealt with instead of pulling people like me over for going five miles over a speed limit. There is a lot for them to do around here and I'm glad they are starting to take care of business like that. It makes me as a citizen have a little bit more hope for our community. Sure wish they would start catching all the drunk people that drive away from that casino though..
well it dose in Medford dont worry they will have more cops investigate it WOW i wonder what that will prove they did everything by the book, YEA RIGHT
don't run from the police and that stuff won't happen
*stop...
That is so sad- but he should have stopped when they said stopped. I think of all people, anyone who has been arrested or in trouble with the law knows that they need to stop or cooperate with the police for their own safety. I think officers would taze anyone no matter what condition they have to keep themselves and others safe. :(
BTW, I'm sorry he hurt you... You're correct in saying that he had his own demons.
Brooke, I'm not saying he was a saint but the officers were warned not to tase him because of his medical condition. Some more details are yet to come to light, I suspect the officers acted carelessly.
Walter was never charged with my assault tho. The cops let me down on that. They said it was he said she said and that I could have broken my jaw with my elbow. I still feel sad he died without experiencing a good life.
It's very sad. This man was on post prison supervision for assault. I was one of his victims. He punched with a fist pack several times and broke my jaw in two places, my cheek bone was chipped, several teeth were chipped and broken, black eyes and severe head concussion. I was wired shut and still paying on my medical bills. He was violent towards several women. I am so sad Walter died without experiencing how good life can be. I do not think the police are at all to blame for this. They were reacting to a erratic person with a very violent past and I am sure that they were doing their best to protect themselves and the publics safety from a unstable person. It's very sad and I am so sorry to all his friends and family. :(
Sorry for the family but also sorry for the officers involved. I sure hope the article mentioned the cpr the officers gave him until arrival of medical and how many times they asked him to comply. With that being said i want to THANK the officers for all there hard work
And I knew him and the stuff he did and know the police did their job so people need to leave it alone. He had his own demons and its very unfortunate but face book is not the place to cause his family or anyone else for that matter more drama.
I just hope for the familys sake that it is acually investigated properly and not covered up.
The artical fails to mention that he died after being tazed. I agree with you Sarah Saucedo. I am sorry to those that are married to a cop, but I see it all of the time and alot of time they are way to agressive with people.
Um yes it was local police. Canyonville has no city police so DCSO and OSP would be the next thing. Everyone is always so quick to blame the police. People have to be responsible for their actions at some point dont they.

LOCAL SCANNER FEED PEOPLE!
being taized
walter was an amazing friend, yeah he was running from the cops, big deal,he could of made it home safely,,he had a good heart, drinking crazyNess but still a goodfriend, cops may or maynot be at fault but in just saying they didn't have to chase him down,he probly would be alive and home.... being raised can kill someone but walter wouldnt hurt anybody unless u were out to get him
u have to know that person to say bad things bout it....
walter wasnt violent, hes ran from the cops, that was the issue,i used to hangout with walter he protected me from everyone, including his bestfriend at the time,he was an awesome friend...the taizers do hurt and will kill people, this isnt the first....
I haven't read all of the above comments (just skimmed), but do they know what caused him to act "erratically"? I know the article mentions possible health problem. Was he by any chance diabetic?
Wow all the drama. R.I.P Walter!
Well said Rachel! People think too much "inside" the box! With the lid closed! To quick to put words in mouths and too quick to assume police are the ones always to blame! =)
Hugs to you, Brooke. Your heart is beautiful. To hold that kind of compassion for someone that you could easily hold so much hate for... Pretty amazing. I wish there were more people in the world like you.
DO NOT put words in my mouth. I NEVER said the police involved are "blameless." I NEVER said that the man that died deserved it, or that it was not a tragedy that he died. I am sad for the people in his life that have lost him. What I DID say, is that I do not believe the police responding INTENDED to kill anyone. And yes. I am MARRIED to a police officer. I know most of the law enforcement in this area. I will defend them, and what they do, because THEY ARE GOOD MEN AND WOMEN. They do not leave their homes and families every time they put on their uniforms and set out to harm other people.
Ahhhh, I get it Brianna is related to the school of idiots!!!!
I have never caused harm to anyone in this manner! Probably cuz I'm not as ignorant as Brianna, and chose to "harm" all of our eyes with her ridiculous antics! I wish I was a fly on your wall when you need these officers of the Law someday! Do you not know anything about criminals and the systems the officers use!?
Brooke thank you for speaking your truth. I believe police are people just like the rest of us and I really believe most of them are honest good people who try to do their best for the community. I think people should wait for all the facts before jumping to conclusions.
"decided to kill." ARE YOU KIDDING ME!? I'm done. You can't argue with ignorance.
So sad =(
No, Sarah, I wasn't there. I DO know that the police did not intentionally try to kill him, and they were responding because they were needed. I don't have to have been there to know that. I also know, that there are times when police respond AS THEY SHOULD, and there are circumstances that they have no way of knowing before they respond. Sometimes, those things impact the outcome of the situation horribly. You don't know enough about what you are talking about to say what you are saying.
I know someone, you could taze him and he won't go down! They do what they have to do to keep all those standing around watching "witnessing" the whole thing safe. They do what they have to do to keep all involved safe! This being spectators "galkers" suspects and themselves!
When dealing with a large man who is acting the way this man was acting, do you really think taking the word of a stranger is going to control the situation? Having seen a situation myself, where a man was trying to harm the officer and the girlfriend stood back begging the cop not to hurt him, how do you think the cop should react? "Oh, ok. I'll back off so I don't hurt your precious." these cops were there to do their jobs and bystanders normally have no effect on normal procedure. If the man had a medical condition (heart problem, possibly?), it probably wasn't causing his behavior, therefore he disregarded his own health and drank/used/did something to warrant police. Don't blame the cops, he put himself in this situation, as sad as it is, the cops are not to blame. They did their job.
Im sorry Rachel..were you there?? Because i was..it wasnt even local cops.
you are right Megan..we saw the whole thing..people were begging them to stop..they crying pleading begging..i dont "assume" i saw..even the police officers were freaked out by their own actions..i guess you had to be there..they tazed him too much..it was horrid..lots of wittnesses though
?? Wow. I sure hope you are never in the situation to need assistance. I hope you do not have children who will grow to despise cops as you do. Yes, there are bad ones, but there are more good ones. There are bad business owners and there are good ones. There are bad drivers, but also good ones. Lumping the whole lot together is just showing immaturity.
He died after they tazed him and had h in cuffs and they were still askin for more back up and ems. Then they tied his legs and then the said they were doin CPR if u download the scanner app u can hear all the cop calls. From the time they pulled him to the time he died was less then 20 mins
There is NOT enough information to pass along j formation so unless you were there at that moment, do not post about what the article does not say! Police are NOT out to harm people and not everything is as it seems. How narrow minded to assume the cops killed this man. There was obviously something going on with him if he was acting as the article says.
Who was it that died???
Sad all the way around. He lost his life as his family lost a member. And the officers involved, they had to try to sleep last night. People are so quick to assume the police are always to blame. Where this happened, there is always children around, due to two schools right there. Along worth multiple stores. If he had a medical condition, think about what's going through the cops minds right now. Knowing that this young man died in their custody? They have feelings and souls as well! Maybe if we all followed the laws they wouldn't need to use force!
Why are so many people assuming the cop killed him? He could have been on drugs. There is NOT enough information in this article to assume the police had any hand in the death of this man. Sounds like it could have happened with or without the cops. Also please note that they were trying to get him out of the street so he wouldn't get hurt ;)
Why do people always jump to conclusions that the cops did something wrong? Maybe he had something wrong with him.
Tyler Budel, what you saw last night.
