ROSEBURG, Ore. - A California man in a rental car faces accusations he drove 118 mph on Interstate 5, recklessly endangering other drives, Oregon State Police said.

State police jailed Keenan F. Pipes, 25, of Madera, California, on charges of Reckless Driving and 4 counts of Recklessly Endangering Another Person.

Police also cited Pipes for doing 118 mph in a 65 mph zone.

The rental car was towed.

The arrest came after complaints from citizens about a driver on I-5 near Roseburg on Monday.

The first call came in just before 6 p.m. reporting a southbound driver speeding and passing on the shoulder near Sutherlin.

Eight minutes later, another driver called to complain about the rented 2013 Chrysler with Oregon plates.

A state trooper saw the vehicle and overtook it a minute later, obtaining a speed reading of 118 mph, state police said.

As the trooper tried to get in position to make a traffic stop, the car continued at high speeds and passed other traffic on the shoulder, police said.

The trooper stopped Pipes and took him into custody about 16 miles from where the first driving complaint came in.
