Mechanic finds grenade in classic car

ROSEBURG, Ore. -- A worker at an auto body repair shop in the Green District got quite a surprise Monday, when he opened the glove box on a classic car and found a grenade.

The owner of Green Collision Repair, Marvin DeVoogd, told KPIC News that his employee discovered the device inside a 1936 Chevy and brought it to him.

"He just set it on my desk, and I kind of said jokingly, 'Maybe I better check into his payroll records,' maybe I owe him a raise or something," said DeVoogd.

DeVoogd said they put the grenade outside on the ground, away from any people or structures that could be harmed.

He said after calling the owner of the vehicle they called police.

Deputies responded and called the Oregon State Police Bomb Squad out of Medford to pick it up.

DeVoogd says that they thought it was a training device, but called police just to be sure.

OSP says the grenade was indeed empty, but the shop owner did the right thing.

DeVoogd said that they train employees to be safe with things that could harm them while working on a car, such as blood or bodily fluids. But this he says, is a first. "Sometimes you'll find firearms in a vehicle, you stay away from firearms," he said. "We will call the customer up and have them come and get them.

He says grenade training might now be put on the agenda. "A grenade, they have never been trained on what to do with a grenade, so I said that will be brought up in the next safety meeting."
