Motorcyclist killed when deer jumps onto highway
GRANTS PASS, Ore. (AP) — A 64-year-old motorcyclist died in a collision with a deer on Oregon Highway 199 south of Grants Pass, the Oregon State Police said.
Sgt. Jeff Proulx says two men were riding Harley Davidson motorcycles northbound on Friday at about 55 mph when a deer that had been standing on the side of the road jumped into the highway.
The officer says lead motorcyclist Alen Collum, 64, of Happy Camp, Calif., struck the deer and crashed off the side of the highway.
The second motorcyclist, a 60-year Happy Camp resident, avoided the deer and maintained control of his bike.
Collum was flown to Rogue Valley Medical Center where he was pronounced dead. Police said he was wearing a helmet.
The deer was also killed.
