New Pre-K program rolled out in Roseburg schools
ROSEBURG, Ore. -- The Roseburg School District is giving free classes to families with kids entering Kindergarten.
Officials with the district say many kids aren't prepared for school.
Schools like Sunnyslope are offering a new program called 'Ready!' which will teach parents how they can help their kids learn before kindergarten. Kris Kelso, the principal at Sunnyslope, says the program could help satisfy concerns she has heard from parents. "I always hear parents say they want them to be more successful than they were, and in order to do that, they have to get an early start on education," she said.
The classes are available to parents of students enrolling in a Roseburg public school that is funded by Title I.
Parents will get materials covering topics like math and positive relationships.
The first class will be on March 12 from 6:00-7:30 pm.

It just dawned on me that this sounds almost exactly like Head Start. It's the parents job to raise and teach their kids when they are young not the school systems and not the governments.
Here, here, Joanne!
Wait! So you mean an elementary school is being CLOSED down so they can start this program for parents who can't be bothered to spend time with their own kids, teach their own kids?! Where is the outcry about this?? It's NUTS!
Yes. Some parents sometimes have too much to do, they can't always do quality time at home with all the things that are expected of them. If they have a lot of young children-some parents can't always teach each child for the amount of time needed. Let children have fun playing and learning with their friends at a safe place. Sometimes the children don't get along with their siblings, sometimes there are no neighborhood children that are the same age as they are, or they are too far away to walk to their friends houses-school is a good place to go.
The schools don't need the kids 24/7/365. Let them grow up at home and they do not need to be government controlled or taught. Besides, what is happening to our schools now that they are being closed and you want to open one of these?
If a parent can't teach their kids to count to 10 and say their ABC's, the child will never succeed in school. Not because the school failed them but because their parents have. Parents should be their children's most important teachers not the public school system (or for some, a free childcare system). It's truly sad. Then again, I homeschool so what do I know.
I think the schools get her children soon enough.
Yes I do!
No
What ever happened to interacting enough with your small children to teach them these things? It's not rocket science for crying out loud! It's really sad that parents need to be "taught" how to "teach" their kids to get them ready for school. How about not putting them IN school before they are ready?
I belive that a program like this should be mandatory for kids these days.
My babysitter taught me to count, abc's, my whole name, and how to spell and tie my shoes before I even started school. I think it helped tremendously! School came pretty easy
yes i do
I think children whose PARENTS do 'programs' like this for them are in a better position! :-P
