EUGENE, Ore. -- According to a nationwide study, Oregon was listed as the second most popular destination for people moving to a new state.

The migration study, released by United Van Lines placed Oregon second only to Washington D.C. as the most popular place for people to move to.

Lisa Lawton of Travel Lane County said that this is likely because of the diverse landscape that the state has to offer.

“We have all these wonderful scenic landscapes that really get you out exploring wonderful adventures from the Oregon coast to the Cascade mountains,” said Lawton.

Many residents have the ocean, mountains and valley within an hour’s drive of their homes.

“I think that's one my favorite things about Oregon, the fact that there’s always more to go do and go see,” said Weston Petewon, a Harrisburg resident.

Joe Williams of Hybrid Real Estate said that he has seen a large number of people moving to Oregon from other states.

“Actually a pretty good influx ... in fact a lot of people in this neighborhood that we've been building out have come from out of state,” said Williams.

Williams said that between the natural beauty of the state, its commerce and the low land prices, Oregon has a definite appeal to people looking to relocate.

“You can buy a home, have it built for generally speaking less than you can buy a comparable existing home,” Williams said.

Rounding out the top five inbound states of 2012 were Nevada, North Carolina and South Carolina.

The United Van Lines said that the top five states people moved out of were (in descending order) New Mexico, New York, West Virginia, Illinois and New Jersey.
