Oregon Grain Belt
This Aug. 8, 2013 photo shows a sunrise from the bluffs inside Cottonwood Canyon State Park in Condon, Ore. The 150 mile loop from Wasco, Antelope, Fossil, Condon and back to Wasco is dotted with towns struggling to stay on the map. Wheat is the one crop that ties much of the loop together, and a unit of The John Day Fossil beds near Clarno and Fossil a reminder of an epic geological history. On a clear day no fewer than six of The Pacific Northwest's tallest peaks shine against the sky. Towns like Mayville, which once supported grocery stores, livery stables, saloons and other businesses with more than 400 residents is now home to three families.
