Jeep with blasting powder, acid on board crashes

SUTHERLIN, Ore. - An SUV carrying blasting powder, ammonia nitrate and sulfuric acid crashed into a utility pole Wednesday evening, triggering a hazardous materials response.

Police closed South Comstock Road after the driver told them about the cargo in his Jeep.

The road remained closed until a haz-mat crew confirmed the containers of potentially hazardous materials were still intact and did not pose a threat to public safety.

The driver, 61-year-old Dale Renbarger of Grants Pass, told police he crashed his 1993 Jeep Cherokee after another vehicle suddenly pulled out in front of him near an intersection.

He swerved to avoid the other car - and left the road and hit a utility pole instead.

While speaking with officers at the scene, Renbarger mentioned he was carrying containers of blasting powder, ammonia nitrate and sulfuric acid in his Jeep.
