ROSEBURG, Ore. -- Police say a 23-year-old man shot himself while an officer was attempting to stop his vehicle in downtown Roseburg Friday night.
Officials say that at around 9:20 p.m., a Roseburg officer attempted to stop a vehicle after the Officer observed several traffic violations.
Police say the officer activated his emergency lights behind the vehicle, but it continued driving north on Stephens.
As the vehicle started to turn west onto Washington from Stephens, authorities say the officer heard several gunshots.
Police say the vehicle then stopped at the intersection of Washington and Pine, and the driver got out of the vehicle covered in blood.
The man was transported to Mercy by ambulance, and was later transported to OHSU in critical condition.
Authorities say the man shot himself with a handgun while seated in his vehicle. A handgun and shell casings were recovered from inside the vehicle, police said.
Officials are not releasing the man's name.
