SUTHERLIN, Ore. - The remains of a man who vanished 2 years ago while on a hike have been found in a ravine less than 1 1/2 miles from his home.

Royce Paul Cratty, 74, was last seen Sept. 24, 2012. His wife dropped him off to go for a hike in the Marvin Hill area, 8 miles west of Sutherlin.

A Roseburg Forest Products employee saw Cratty in the woods that same day.

When he failed to return home, his wife reported him missing.

A search of the area and public appeal for help at the time proved fruitless.

On Sunday, Aug. 3, 2014, a property owner called the Douglas County Sheriff to report finding skeletal remains on a mountain on his property.

The remains, identified as Cratty by the medical examiner, were in a ravine in an area that was not previously searched, the sheriff's office said.

The location was 2.7 miles from where Cratty was last seen and about 1.4 miles from his home.
