Roadside logging to remove hazard trees

DOUGLAS COUNTY, Ore. -- The Oregon Department of Transportation is removing trees along I-5 and Highway 38 in Douglas County.

ODOT officials say trees are a top safety concern, and since it's been a mild winter, they're using excess funds to take out some trees that could cause a problem.

Chris Hunter of ODOT says the trees right next to the roadway can be a danger. "Every winter we get trees that will come down," Hunter said. "Fortunately, most of those don't hit the highway. As they come down, they can splinter off, pieces can go flying and go out into the roadway."

The process has involved speaking with the state forester and making sure nesting birds aren't in the trees.

The project should be done by March 15.
