Roseburg Blockbuster closing it's doors
ROSEBURG, Ore. -- People who like to rent movies at a store will have less options now that Blockbuster Video announced they will be closing the one in Roseburg.
At the end of the month, the store will stop renting movies and doing in-store exchanges for their online customers.
According to employees, they will then do an eight week liquidation of all the merchandise in the store.
The only remaining video stores will be locally owned, and places like North Umpqua Video see this as an opportunity to grow. "It means we are going to get a lot busier," said owner Eric Winslow. "It means we are going to be the only video store left in the Roseburg city limits, which is a great thing for us."
To reduce costs, Blockbuster is closing certain stores around the country, turning their focus to online service and new rental kiosks to compete with Redbox.
Even though alternatives to video stores are growing, Winslow says the way DVDs are sold to retailers, it will give him an advantage on bigger titles. "We are getting those the day they come out and our competition is not. Depending on the movie, they are waiting 28 days in order to get it, where we get it the day it hits the streets," Winslow said.
Blockbuster currently has eight employees working at the Roseburg store, who will all be laid off once they close.
The store usually offers transfers to other locations, the nearest one being in Cottage Grove.
