Roseburg council member resigns

ROSEBURG, Ore. -- The City of Roseburg is losing a council member.

Steve Tuchscherer is resigning from office, after he says he was diagnosed with an aggressive form of cancer.

Tuchscherer has served the city council for about a term and a half.

Mayor Larry Rich says Tuchscherer talked about having a problem with his eye for the last month or two. "He did show up to council for I think, probably two meetings at least, maybe even three, and he had the big bulge on the eye," said Rich. "So, you can see that he's in a lot of pain. And at that time, he didn't know what it was."

Mayor Rich says Tuchscherer is beginning treatment for the Merkel Cell Carcinoma on Tuesday.

He was advised by doctors to eliminate all stressful activities.

His resignation letter said he was unsure of what time and energy he would have be able to dedicate to council in the future.

Steve held the seat of Ward 2, Position 2.
