Hostage situation resolved at Crescent Lake

CRESCENT LAKE, Ore. -- A hostage situation that caused Oregon Police State troopers to close off the area surrounding Crescent Lake ended just after 5:00 Tuesday afternoon.

Police responded to a hostage situation involving Alberto Martinez and Melody Mickel, a kidnapped Hermiston woman and her ex-boyfriend, at a cabin near Chresent Lake.

After negotiations between OSP and Martinez, he exited the cabin holding a knive to Mickel, using her as a human shield. A SWAT team member shot Martinez in the head, giving him a superficial wound. Police were able to end the situation without Mickel getting hurt.

Martinez, 28, was treated for the injury at a Bend area hospital before being transported to Deschutes County Jail on a parole violation warrant. Charges regarding the hostage situation and kidnapping are pending on current investigations from Umatilla and Klamath County.

The hostage situation took place nearly 5 days after Mickel went missing Thursday. The 26-year-old Hermiston woman reported that she was being held against her will at the cabin for that time. Police said she was kidnapped by her estranged boyfriend, Alberto Martinez.

OSP initially responded to the cabin Tuesday morning after they received reports that a vehicle involved in Mickel's missing persons case was seen in the area.

Klamath County District Attourney's Office will release their findings from the investigation in front of a grand jury after it is completed.
