EUGENE, Ore. - In their quest for a second consecutive shot at the state championship, the Sheldon Irish football team must meet again with the Roseburg Indians in the Irish’s second playoff game of the season. The winner will advance to the quarterfinals.

Both teams have one playoff game win under their belts. The Indians beat the Gresham Gophers in an all-out battle, 39-38. The Irish defeated their opponents, the David Douglas Scots, in a lopsided game, 42-6.

When asked how Sheldon played against David Douglas this past week, Sheldon head coach Lane Johnson said, “I thought we were real sluggish to begin with. After that, we were very sharp.”

The Irish remain undefeated thus far, at 10-0, and will continue to pose a threat to their upcoming opponents.

The Roseburg Indians are now 6-5 with their upset against Gresham. The Indians have averaged 29.27 points thus far, including playoffs, to their opponents’ 25 points.

The Irish have averaged 48.1 points, only giving up an average of 12 points to their opponents.

When asked what they will do to prepare for this week’s game, wide receiver Connor Strahm said that the Irish hope for “a good week of practice. We had an off-week, which I think kind of slowed us down. Knowing that we didn’t perform our best will motivate us for next week."

“We’re pretty familiar with Roseburg," Johnson said. "The team is very well coached. We have a ton of respect for them.”

Roseburg’s coach, Thurman Bell, is in his 43rd year as head coach at the high school. Johnson went on to deem him as “one of the best high school football coaches” in Oregon history.

In their prior matchup on October 12, Sheldon were the victors against Roseburg, with a score of 49-14 on Roseburg turf. In the first quarter against the Indians, the Irish put up 21 points, and then went on to score 28 more thereafter.

The only question is: Can Sheldon beat Roseburg again and keep their journey to the state championships alive? The answer comes at the end of the rematch.

The Sheldon Irish play the Roseburg Indians on Friday, November 16, in Eugene at 7 p.m.
