SUTHERLIN, Ore. -- Sutherlin city officials have chosen a new Chief of Police, a position they've been working to fill since last October.
Kirk Sanfilippo is a 31-year veteran of law enforcement.
Before coming to Douglas County, he worked as Chief of Harbor Police for the port of San Diego.
He retired from that position in 2010, but decided that he wasn't done serving. "I love the people that are in public safety work, both police, fire and emergency services people," he said. "They're just, they're a very special group of people and they have a very special culture, and I missed that culture and I missed the people."
Kirk and his wife moved to Douglas County to be closer to family, and he says he's excited to help keep the area safe.
While in San Diego, Sanfilippo oversaw hundreds of employees, and says that working as Sutherlin's chief will be a bit of an adjustment. "I'm looking forward to it, because I really believe it'll give me more time to get to know people better. And who knows, maybe be able to do even more than I was able to do at a large agency, because I can touch a lot lives on a one on one basis," he said.
He's excited for his new adventure.
Sanfilippo will take on the position starting June 11.
