Sheriff: Teen found with 3 pipe bombs in backpack
Erik Harris

GOLD BEACH, Ore. -- Deputies say a Gold Beach teen had 3 pipe bombs in his backpack while he was riding a motorcycle near a local motel.

Just before 4 p.m. on Wednesday, Curry County deputies stopped a man riding an unlicensed and non-street legal motorcycle near the Motel 6 on Jerry's Flat Road.

Authorities identified the rider as Erik Harris, 18, of Gold Beach.

His probation officer told deputies to take him into custody on an unrelated probation violation.

That's when officials say they conducted a search of his backpack and found 3 homemade pipe bombs.

The Oregon State Police were contacted and a bomb technician from Medford responded.

State police took the improvised explosive devices to Medford to render them safe.

Harris was lodged in the Curry County Jail for Probation Violation and three counts of Possession of a Destructive Device.

The Curry County Sheriff’s Office and Oregon State Police are continuing the investigation, then it will be turned over to the Curry County District Attorney.
