Police: Lockdown lifted, suspect in custody
DOUGLAS COUNTY, Ore. -- The lockdown at all the South Umpqua schools has been lifted, after police say the person who made the threat to commit suicide at a school has been taken into custody.
Officials say that the schools had been in lockdown since around 8:30 am, after a male made a threat to commit suicide at one of the schools. Police say that threat was posted on Facebook.
Police have identified the suspect as Wesley William Snyder (AKA Miller), 22, of Myrtle Creek.
The school district says Snyder was previously a student in the South Umpqua School District, but is not currently attending school there.
Police say the threats were of a serious nature, and included threats to shoot people in the Myrtle Creek area as well as at the Myrtle Creek area schools.
Authorities put all of the schools in the district on lockdown as a safety precaution.
Police say Snyder was taken into custody after a brief struggle, and is being charged by police with disorderly conduct and resisting arrest.
The lockdown ended at around 11:20, and Snyder was taken to the Douglas County Jail.
The credit should not go to the police..it should go to the mom..she was the one who alerted the police and they took their sweet time doing something about it..And if more parents had the balls to do this sort of thing, maybe the other acts of violence of the same type could have been avoided too..Just sayin. Think about it.
th
Police have known about his threats for a while now He has voiced it numerous times and just laughed at....
they did NOT react quickley... the police were called and they detained and the Mercy released him. Â I know, I called the police and turned him in.Â
My kids go to that elementry school right across the street its was a lil scary for that to happen to my kids they said i was scared for them as well ... And thanks police for not lettin it progress any further..
so if law enforcement had the information regarding this last night, why were the students even sent to school. Why put the students, staff and support staff in this situation. The report I heard earlier today sounded like he had posted this on his facebook yesterday.
You should have read the things he posted on his facebook! It gave me chills just reading about it. He had the intention of reeking havoc in our schools. I am very happy that people reacted quickly to this situation and ensured the safety of all students!
Is anyone else waiting for the inevitable prayer in schools comment?
Sorry David.. I am usually the very silent one :( I had to break it today, against my better judgement, but sensitivity in things like this are soo very important. It is sad for the young man who was so distraught and suicidal that he took this action and it is so scarey for our children and their families, who were scared by this. Hopefully this young man will get the help he needs and the school kids will all get the love and support from their families and school staff to feel safe. Enough out of me.. I am sorry for not turnin the other cheek and being the better person, it is just hard when people are insensitive to others that are obviously reaching out for help. Sorry again.
@everyone If you don't like or agree with what someone says, be the bigger person and ignore it.. So tired of the bickering, you even got me to break my silence. Just Sayin
Debra obviously it is people like you with the attitude "Don't care" that is a problem in society.. It is funny, I expected you to be younger with your insensitive comments and come to find out you graduated in 1974, so you are a adult with a bad attitude !! Morgan graduated 20 years after you, 1994 and works with some family members of mine at Orenco and her comments are a reflection of her age etc. Yours are just insensitive, especially for a supposed mature older adult !! Just my opinion..
And thank you Morgan, wasn't directing to Shelly but apparently she likes putting her to cents in
@ Shelly To bad don't care
that person should be charged with attemted murder after stateing he was going to shoot other people
This is heartbreaking news & my thoughts & even my prayers are with this family. May they find the comfort needed to get thru this difficulty in their life. Teenage years are harder for some. It's best when we build each other up with positive attitudes & acceptance rather than tearing someone apart due to their differences. Let's face it life is hard. Being sensitive to others is a trait we should ALL learn to develop.
I meant turned
How sad :( Hope it all tire out OK
A huge Thank You to South Umpqua for acting in such a fast manner to insure the safety of the students and others inside the School .....
I posted earlier, without watching the news first at noon... Apparently this guy DID make threats on facebook about a possible school shooting, this was on KPIC news at noon. So sorry to all the worried parents and kids at the school for having to go through this.. You are all in my thoughts.. Great job to the school district for your quick actions to protect our kids xxxooo
Oh wow, just found out that is super close to where I live as well
Here is a video of an adorable kitten to end the bickering and cheer you all up.http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eALrmZCHwlU
He was no where near the school. It stems from comments he posted on fb. He was still sleeping when the cops knocked on his door.
Had no threats been made that put others in harms way I would have had all the sympathy in the world
http://www.upworthy.com/bullies-called-him-pork-chop-he-took-that-pain-with-him-and-then-cooked-it-into
And it's opinions like that to a person like that that set them off really should of let him die small minded
When the 'poor guy' put threats on my kids and those I work with was when he became a criminal and not someone who gets any sympathy from me-putting a whole community in fear for loved ones who had nothing to do with his issues. Had he threatened suicide at home putting no others in harms way, I would feel very differently. No I heard about no direct threats to students, but having a weapon with intent to use IN a school put all those families in fear!
And to add to it sence I actrully read some of your statements I really hope this wasn't an adult because if it was and his first reaction was to go to a school filled with children that is a threat there's a big difference in a teen doing this and an adult if it was an adult what was some random adult doin at a school in the first place
IN MY OPINION (heavy stress on that part) someone who wants to commit suicide, will commit suicide. Someone who wants attention will announce that they are going to commit suicide and possibly put others in danger. Someone who wants help, will ask for it, maybe by saying they are going to commit suicide, but never by threatening others. I think society has gotten way too sensitive to every little thing. Kids aren't even allowed to play cops & robbers or call each other "booger heads" because it will be considered threatening or bullying. Again, JUST MY OPINION.
They shoulda let him off himself
Personally this breaks my heart there are two sides to this why I can understand how terrifying this must of been for the parents involved to sit on the side lines and wait and the students to be scared I can't help but feel a sence of sadness for this kid not that there's ever an excuse to threaten others this kid most of been hurting depresstion is a disease people don't pick it and don't ask for it it's an embalence with the chemicals in your head this kid prob doesn't even understand what's goin on I pray for the family's who sat three this but I'm also praying for this kid that he gets the help he needs and I also pray for his family because I couldn't emagine going threw this if that was one of my children my heart would be breaking and I'm sure if you all kinda sall it like that you'd find a lil understanding maybe not forgiveness but understanding
The schools and local law enforcement did a first-rate job in this situation. Â They are to be commended.
Jenn, The "electric chair comment" was just someone commenting about the situation.. Regardless if the person considering suicide was a adult or a student, it is a tragic thing that someone feels so alone in the world.. The Person didn't threaten to harm any of the students, it was a threat against them~self. However, a person in such despair, could potentionally harm others, so precautions were taken. ~update~ He did apparently make statements on facebook about a possible school shooting... :(
Because they threatened to endanger all those kids.
They need both prayer and people to talk to. My preference is to go to The Lord cause He is always available. Some people don't know Jesus yet and we all need special people in our lives. If you've never accepted Jesus as your Savior you really don't understand. A personal relationship with Him is what you need!
Im so confused... Why would someone threatening suicide need the electric chair??
My heart goes out to him.How horrible it must be to feel their is no one to turn to and your life isn't worth anything. We are all precious to someone and life wouldn't be the same without us in their lives.
this is so close to home :( is sad we cannot feel safe in our own towns cuz trouble nd insecure people not only want to end their lifes but also kill inocent students :(
"Any" person that is threatening suicide needs to have help and support, regardless of "who" they are or "how old" they are. It is sad that someone feels so isolated and alone that they take these steps. I am glad that the school went on lock~down to ensure the safety of all involved, and Thank~you Morgan, for showing your "sensitive" side. I didn't ~point you out by name~ Your name was on your post for all to see. Sorry if this dis~respected you. Glad this all ended well. Hopefully the person, regardless of age, sex, religion etc. will be able to get some help.. In my thoughts !!
God didn't catch him, the police did. blah blah blah blah.
Thank THE POLICE that the police have the one who started this mess!
Kindness & compassion go a long way. Just because you can type doesn't mean you should
Thank GOD the police have the one who started this mess!
Guess they got the guy. I appreciated the automatic phone calls, but hated having to wait, when my instinct is to go try to save my kid.
POLICE: Suspect in custody, lockdown lifted. Story will be updated here: http://www.kpic.com/news/local/Threat-sends-South-Umpqua-schools-into-lockdown-192074971.html
It is not necessarily a kid..the article says the man that made the threat used to attend schools in that district...it does not say kid...just thought i would add that in and if it is a MAN he does not need prayers he needs the electric chair...the kids my need prayers but the threatener does not
Shelly, it sounds like you're the one being rude here. Picking out people by name and giving your unsolicited opinions and advice. Have you forgotten that some poor kid is having suicidal thoughts? How insensitive.
& Debra.... You're just as bad... "Duh" ?? What the heck. How old are you and where is your sense of respect ? Would it kill you to be nice and just simply say, "Thinking of the young person and family that must be going through some rough times to get to this point.. Hope you can get the help and support you need" Hugs.. Goodness sakes !!!
I don't think this Morgan, needs to be so sacastic and rude... "Its apparent blah blah..." That is just rude.. People need to be nice. That is half the problems with youth and people getting driven to the point of suicide from being bullied, mis~understood and hearing sacastic rude comments that insult their personalities, opinions, etc.. Come on people.. Pull together and think of what is important here..
I don't understand..  if the person who threatened to commit sucide is a FORMER student (who doesnt attend now) why the whole school is locked down?Â
@Chris  because he said he would do it at a school as well as kill others in the area. Very wise decision by the school until the police/Sheriff could take him into custody.
makes perfect sense to protect the children since this person said they would do the 'harm to themselves' ON CAMPUS. would you not take precautions to protect the students and staff if you knew they were heading to a school to kill themselves?
@Janet TMakes total sense ... I missed the ON CAMPUS part..
The suspect has been apprehended and the lock down has been lifted (just taken from the district website)...thank goodness
