UCC announces oversight committee for bond levy funds

WINCHESTER, Ore. -- Umpqua Community College officials have announced the formation of a bond oversight committee, who will oversee the spending of $40-million they will get if the bond levy passes in the May election.
UCC President Dr. Joe Olson says the group of nine citizens understand the community and local culture.
He told KPIC News on Friday that he hopes the committee will boost public trust and enhance accountability with the bond money.
Paul Utz, the chair of the oversight committee, says they will will work for the residents. "The oversight committee will represent, if you will, a broad cross section of the community where we can be advocates for all in the community, whether they're directly involved with the college or not," he said.
The committee will select contractors and make recommendations to the UCC Board of Trustees.
The committee members are:
- Paul Utz, a retired engineer who will also act as the committee chair and who, with his wife, has funded a scholarship for nursing students at UCC.
- Toby Luther, chief executive officer of Lone Rock Timber Company.
- Ted Romas, the president of the Myrtle Creek/Tri City Chamber of Commerce.
- Ron Breyne, executive director of the Phoenix School on Diamond Lake Boulevard in Roseburg.
- Griff Davies, local representatives of the Pacific Northwest Regional Council of Carpenters.
- Alison Eggers, local manager of Macy’s Department Store and a former president of the Roseburg Area Chamber of Commerce.
- Mike Fieldman, executive director of UCAN (United Community Action Network).
- Debbie Fromdahl, president and CEO of the Roseburg Area Chamber of Commerce.
- Jane Mitchell, store manager, Canyonville branch, Umpqua Bank.
Last week, college officials announced an agreement to purchase land next to South Umpqua High School to build a regional training center.
