EUGENE, Ore. - A University of Oregon graduate was shot dead on the streets of Oakland, California, less than an hour before his birthday.

Aya Nakano would have turned 23 on Thursday, June 13.

Police in Oakland said Nakano was shot dead in the 5800 block of Market Street around 10:57 p.m. Wednesday, June 12. Nakano was a resident of Emeryville, California.

Investigators said Nakano's vehicle was rear-ended by another car just before the shooting. The occupants of that car got in a confrontation with Nakano, who was then shot dead. The car and its two occupants fled the scene, police.

The suspect vehicle is described as a newer, silver four-door sedan with possible front-end damage, police said.

Oakland Police and Crime Stoppers of Oakland are offering a reward of up to $10,000 for information leading to an arrest in this case. Anyone with information is asked to contact the OPD Homicide Division, (510) 238-3821.
