ROSEBURG, Ore. -- A Roseburg teacher was the first to be given the Education Celebration Award from the Oregon College Savings Plan.
Stephen Buckley teaches third grade at Sunnyslope Elementary, and all of the students and staff were on hand to watch him receive the recognition.
Buckley was selected out of 70 other teachers around the state, but he claims he couldn't be the educator he is today with out everyone else around him. "I truly can't find the words, I just feel so fortunate and I just know there are hundreds of teachers out there throughout Oregon that could very well, and do deserve to be in my very same place right now," he said.
Along with the award, Buckley will received a $1,500 cash prize, and the school gets a $5,000 check.
Sunnyslope doesn't know how they will spend their money, but Buckley says he plans on making some repairs to his house and having some fun with his wife.
Stephen says the key to being a good teacher has always been about using the best from other educator's styles. "Different ways and different strategies for teaching, and using as many different strategies as I possible can. Trying to make it something they can relate to in their everyday lives is also important."
Buckley has been teaching for 36 years, and he says he's honored to receive the recognition.
