When will the Car of the Future arrive? How about next weekend?
By KVAL.com staffEUGENE, Ore. -- Want to drive or ride in a car powerd by a hydrogen fuel cell? Be one of the first 200 registered visitors to the Hydrogen Road Tour in Eugene or Corvallis on May 30 or Portland on May 31. The 1,700-mile, 28-stop Hydrogen Road Tour started Thursday in southern California and wraps up June 3 in Vancouver, British Columbia.

Infographics from How It Works booklet Car of the Future movie May 28 In a related pre-Autzen event -- from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m., Thursday, May 28 -- a film-and-discussion session will be presented by the University of Oregon's department of chemistry, Materials Science Institute and Office of Sustainability. "Car of the Future," a 2008 documentary hosted by Car Talk's Tom and Ray Magliozzi, will be shown in 180 Prince Lucien Campbell Hall, 1415 Kincaid St., followed by presentations by UO professors Robert Young, who specializes in green cities and sustainability, and Shih-Yuan Liu, who studies hydrogen chemistry. Vehicles on display May 30 at Autzen come from seven automakers. Hydrogen refueling trucks also will be featured. The tour is sponsored by the California Fuel Cell Partnership, U.S. Department of Transportation, National Hydrogen Association and U.S. Department of Energy. Engineers who work on the vehicles and provide hydrogen fuel will be on hand to talk to visitors. The UO stop will be accessible through Entry 4 of Autzen's parking lot off Leo Harris Parkway. On the grounds will be a large tent with displays about the UO's sustainability projects and research. "We want this event to showcase not only the cars but also the university's commitment to sustainability, green chemistry and energy-related research," said Liu, a professor of chemistry.
