Campground evacuated due to forest fire
LAKEVIEW, Ore. - A fire burning in heavy, dead vegetation in rugged terrain prompted the evacuation of a campground on Wednesday.
Dog Lake Campground was evacuated and remains closed as a result of the Barry Point fire, 22 miles southwest of Lakeview.
"Fire behavior remains active with torching and spotting," fire bosses report. "Growth potential remains high."
For now, the fire was estimated at just under 2,000 acres. Over 300 people are fighting the fire in steep rocky terrain as it burns through dead or dying timber. The fire is 25 percent contained.
On Tuesday, the Lake County Sheriff's Department and a Forest Service Law Enforcement Officerbegan notifying residents, landowners and people recreating in the area about the threat posed by the fire.
"Although we're swiftly working to stop this fire," said Leland Hunter Incident Commander, "the safety of human life is priority."
Roads near active firefighting are closed or restricted due to traffic.
