Fire? Really? Yes! Now is the time to get ready

DOUGLAS COUNTY, Ore. -- Fire season isn't coming up until June, but there are a few things you can do now in your own backyard to prevent fires from happening.

At the Douglas Forest Protective Association, they say clearing out defensible space, or the first 200 feet outside of your home, can help firefighters protect your house in the event of a fire.

Kyle Reed, a fire prevention specialist for the DFPA, says it's the best way to keep from losing your home and property to fire. "A lot of those fires are around houses, so there's a potential every year that houses could be lost," he said.

Reed says that in a typical year, the DFPA responds to between 75-80 wildland fires on DFPA lands.

Doing a few things now can go a long way, things as easy as mowing your lawn to cleaning your gutters.
