Officials urging caution around area waterways

DOUGLAS COUNTY, Ore. -- We are looking at gorgeous weather this weekend, and for some, that means a little time on the water.
But that day trip out on the river could turn deadly if you're not careful.
Six people drowned in Douglas County waterways last year, and officials are urging people to be safe.
Authorities say one of the best things you can do is know your limits. "Typically what we'll see this time of year, is people overestimating their abilities and underestimating the conditions," said Douglas County Sheriff's Deputy Dwes Hutson.
Hutson says the water is still very cold, and that can sap energy quickly, even for a strong, fit person.
As always, he reminds people that alcohol and time on the water do not mix.
Above all, Hutson just asks people to use common sense when they're out on the water.
