Docs fall short at American Legion World Series
By Jason Hink, Douglas County Sports OnlineSPOKANE, Wash. -- The Dr. Stewarts were one of three legion baseball teams left standing in the nation playing in the American Legion World Series in Spokane. The Docs took on Eden Prairie, Minnesota on Monday night, the only undefeated team left in the world series, and the team that handed the Docs their opening-round loss. Trailing 1-0 in the bottom of the second, the Doc's Johnny Farrington gets a base hit to the right, Brandon Jackson scores to tie it up at one. But, the game was halted momentarily as Jackson was recognized as the 10,000th run to score in the history of the legion world series. With the honor, Jackson and Farrington posed for photos and signed the baseball, which is one its way to Cooperstown, New York. Back to the action, Eden Prairie's Matt Halloran gets all of a pitch, and 412 feet later, the two-run shot puts the Minnesota state champs up 4-1. In the bottom of the seventh, Roseburg's Vince Ampi drives a pitch out of the park for a solo shot, to cut the deficit to 5-2. But, it's too little too late, as Eden Prairie closed the door on the Docs in the ninth to advance to the final day of the tournament, with a 6-2 victory. There will be a welcome home rally Wednesday night at 6:00 p.m. at Legion Field to celebrate the historical run by Douglas County's legion team.
