Docs receive heroes welcome
By Dan Bain KPIC NewsROSEBURG, Ore. -- The Roseburg Dr. Stewarts baseball team got a rousing welcome home Wednesday night at Legion Field. The Docs were being honored for their third place finish in the American Legion World Series in Spokane, Washington, and a big crowd turned out to honor them for their accomplishments, finishing higher than any Roseburg legion team ever. One of the Docs who had a huge playoff run was Vince Ampi, who was awarded the American Legion Baseball Irvin Cowger award for the most runs batted in during the regional and world series competition, with 19. "That's how its been all season for me, is these guys get on base, and it's pretty easy to get them in because they're always on base," said Ampi, "but you never think when you're out there. You're just always trying to win games and sometimes actually a little bonus like this happens. But, we just had a blast as a team, it feels great." Ampi is going to Western Oregon this fall to get educated and play baseball for former Docs coach Jermiah Robbins. Cameron Newell, who had a huge three-run homer and a spectacular catch in center field to end the game against Virginia, was honored as an all tournament selection. "Coming down to Klamath Falls, still on the road, beating Medford twice in that Sunday game, was just unbelievable," said Newell. "It just kept getting better from that, going up to Spokane and winning that regional in five games, and getting to go to the American Legion World Series was an amazing feeling, and I couldn't ask for anything more and a better note to go out on." Pitcher Brandon Jackson was also honored as all-tournament. Docs players signed autographs for their fans and had their pictures taken for about an hour after the ceremony, and the regional championship flag was raised on the flag pole at Legion Field.
