Artis leads five Ducks in double-figures to close exhibition slate

EUGENE, Ore.—The Oregon Ducks men’s basketball team closed out its exhibition slate by defeating Southwestern Oklahoma State Bulldogs 82-65 in front of 5,448 at Matthew Knight Arena on Monday night.

Oregon had five players score in double figures as freshman Dominic Artis led the way with 15, followed by fellow freshman Damyean Dotson and seniors E.J. Singler, Tony Woods and Carlos Emory who scored 12 points each. Junior Waverly Austin led the way for the Ducks on the boards with 11 rebounds, four of them offensive.

The Bulldogs started off fast as they went up 16-13 with 11 minutes left in first half. Oregon caught back up and never looked back after going to a stifling full-court press defense that led to several Bulldog turnovers. An alley-oop from senior Johnathan Loydto freshman Ben Carter with a minute left in the half put the Ducks up by five (30-25). After a quick basket by SWOSU, a three-point play by Emory put Oregon up 33-27 heading into halftime.

EJ Singler started off the second half for Oregon with a three-pointer, and the Ducks went on to extend their lead thanks to more solid defense and points off of turnovers (30). UO outrebounded Southwestern Oklahoma State 40-28, while shooting a higher percentage from the floor (53.6% to 39.7%) and scoring more points in the paint (40 to 24). The Ducks shot 41.2% from beyond the arc, while the Bulldogs shot 45.5% from three-point range.

Defense was the real key, however, as Oregon recorded 16 steals and eight blocks in the game. Austin led the way defensively with five blocks and three steals, while Artis stole the ball four times and Dotson and Willie Moore also contributed three steals a piece.

Oregon opens its regular season schedule at home on Saturday against Northern Arizona at 4:30 p.m.
