EUGENE, OR - Maybe they've just got a lot of down time, but Oregon Track Club's Russell Brown and Andrew Wheating share a special bond. They enjoy clowning around and putting the video of their adventures on the internet for the world to watch.
"We'd be at practice everyday and be on these runs together and try to pass the time," explained Brown. "We'd get to talking and come up with these zany ideas."
"On our runs, we just goof ball and knock around ideas, just really stupid things," said Wheating. "In today's society, sitcoms kind of get a lot of attention. We've seen our fair share of sitcoms and so these stupid ideas blossomed to how we would see them in a sitcom."
They've got their own website called "Behind The Stands." Not much is off limits for the two runners. You'll have to see it for yourself.
"When we first started, it was just pure entertainment," said Brown. "Then we realized that we kind of had something. We wanted people to see it. Both of us were sort of proud of what we'd done."
"Next thing, I'm in drag on the street corner," said Wheating. "So, I said, 'Well, now the bar's been raised. What's going to be the next stupid thing we do?'"
Next up on the track is the U.S. Olympic Trials at Hayward Field beginning Friday, June 22nd.
"As it approaches, I'm actually getting less and less nervous because I've realized that there's just not much to it," said Brown. "If I just run as fast as I can, then I might just be on the team. That's pretty fantastic."
Wheating shocked the Hayward crowd and himself in 2008 when finished second in the 800-meter final to earn a trip to Beijing and the Olympics. He's had to fight off injuries the past couple years and is hoping for a return trip to the summer games.
"I just want to go into it (and) I want to have fun," said Wheating. "I just want to see what happens. I think that attitude worked for me four years ago. I think I'm going to try to keep to it this year."
That'll be worth watching.
