Danny Hayes paced Oregon State with two of the team’s season-high four home runs as they opened their three-game series at Bailey-Brayton with a 10-2 win over Washington State Friday night.
Michael Conforto and Ryan Barnes also hit home runs for the Beavers, who surpassed their previous season high of three, accomplished three times and most recently in last weekend’s opener at Utah.
Conforto gave the Beavers (34-17 overall, 14-11 Pac-12 Conference) a 3-0 lead in the first inning with his 12th home run of the season, then returned to the dugout and watched as Hayes hit a solo shot over the right center fence.
Hayes made it 7-1 in favor of the Beavers in the second with a three-run home run lined over the right field fence. It put him at four RBI on the night, which he added to with a sacrifice fly in the eighth for a 9-2 lead. His five RBI set a season-high for the junior.
Barnes gave the Beavers their fourth home run of the game in the sixth, driving a solo shot to left in the sixth. It was his second homer of the season and put OSU up, 8-1.
Barnes and Ryan Dunn each had three hits to lead the Beavers, while Hayes, Tyler Smith and Ryan Gorton all had two. Conforto, who also walked twice, finished with three RBI to give him 66 on the year. He’s now one shy of tying Joe Gerber (2000) for the most in a single-season at Oregon State.
Ben Wetzler started for the Beavers and did not figure in the decision after allowing five hits, one run and six walks in 4 2/3 innings. He threw 110 pitches and was relieved by Cole Brocker with runners on second and third with two outs in the fifth.
Brocker proceeded to strike out Kyle Johnson to end the inning.
Matt Boyd worked 2 2/3 innings in relief to earn the win, improving to 4-0 this season. He struck out six and allowed just one hit.
Oregon State touched Washington State (25-25, 10-15) starter Tanner Chleborad for eight runs in 5 1/3 innings. The right-hander surrendered all four home runs and dropped to 4-3 this season.
Taylor Ard homered and finished with two hits to lead the Cougars.
The Beavers and Cougars continue the series Saturday at 4:35 p.m. PT. The game will air live on ROOT Sports NW (channel 34 on Comcast and 687 on DirecTV) and FCS channel 414.
OREGON STATE NOTES: Michael Conforto’s first-inning home run was his third in the first this season … Conforto’s and Danny Hayes’ back-to-back home runs in the first marked the third time OSU teammates did that this season … First was Dylan Davis and Ryan Dunn on March 11 vs. Oklahoma … Then it was Conforto and Dunn on May 11 against Utah … OSU improved to 19-11 in games played away from Goss Stadium this season … OSU has scored 10 runs in the first inning of its last two series openers after posting six at Utah … The Beavers last hit four home runs at Washington on May 14, 2011 … The win was Pat Casey’s 612th at Oregon State and needs one to tie Jack Riley for the most in an OSU uniform.
