Matt Boyd added to Golden Spikes Award watch list

DURHAM, N.C. – Oregon State senior left-handed pitcher Matt Boyd was added to the Golden Spikes Award watch list Thursday by USA Baseball. He joins sophomore Michael Conforto as Beavers on the midseason watch list for the sport’s most coveted postseason honor.

Boyd is 8-2 this season and has a 1.96 earned run average this season entering this weekend’s series with California. The lefty is third in the Pac-12 Conference with a .192 average against, third with 70 strikeouts and eighth in ERA.

A native of Mercer Island, Wash., he’s earned two Pac-12 Pitcher of the Week honors this season and is slated to open the series against California on the mound Friday. He is 4-0 with a 1.42 ERA in five appearances at Goss Stadium this season.

Conforto, meanwhile, continues on the watch list after being named to it prior to the season. He is hitting .327 this season to go along with a team-best seven home runs. He has also driven in 29 runs.

The Golden Spikes Award is given annually to the nation’s top collegiate player. The watch list currently contains 60 players, which will be trimmed to 30 semifinalists on May 28. Three finalists will be announced June 4 with the winner selected and presented on July 19.

Oregon State and California open a three-game series Friday night at Goss Stadium. First pitch is scheduled for 5:35 p.m. PT. The Goss Stadium ticket office opens at 3:30 p.m. on Friday.
