OSU's Matt Boyd named Pac-12 pitcher of the week

WALNUT CREEK, Calif. – Oregon State left-handed pitcher Matt Boyd has been named the Pac-12 Conference’s Pitcher of the Week, the league announced on Tuesday.

Boyd shut down San Diego State Friday night en route to the Beavers’ sweep of the Aztecs. He scattered five hits in a career-long 8 1/3 innings with a career-best nine strikeouts. The senior allowed hits in the third and seventh innings, retiring 13 straight in between.

Boyd lowered his earned run average to 1.17 on the year and opponents are batting just .196 against him. He has struck out 13 while allowing 11 hits and just two walks in 15 1/3 innings.

The honor is the first of Boyd’s career as the start against the Aztecs marked just his fourth-ever start. The Oregon State has now picked up 67 league pitcher of the week honors since 1986 – the first year they were awarded – which is second-best in the league behind Stanford.

Boyd and the Beavers now set their sights on Bryant, which comes to Goss Stadium for a four-game series starting Friday night at 5:35 p.m. PT. The teams play two on Saturday, beginning at 1:05 p.m., and wrap up the series Sunday at 1:05 p.m.
