Beaver Baseball: Robles leads OSU to Surprise win
By KVAL Sports & OSU Media ServicesSURPRISE, Ariz. – Tanner Robles spun 7 2/3 innings of scoreless baseball, and Oregon State utilized some timely hitting for a 9-0 shutout of Utah Valley Saturday afternoon. Robles scattered nine hits over those seven innings, but held the Wolverines off the scoreboard otherwise. He struck out nine and teamed with Nick Stiltner to shut out Utah Valley; Oregon State’s third shutout in 10 games this season. Robles improved to 2-1 with the victory. The lefty threw sss pitches in his third start of the season. “Tanner gave up nine hits, but toughened up to keep them off the board,” Oregon State head coach Pat Casey said. “The offense came through when it needed, and it was a good way to come back from the loss to Arizona State. We’ll get back at it tomorrow against Cal Poly.” The offense posted seven hits off three Utah Valley pitchers, led by Stefen Romero’s two hits. No other Beaver finished with more than one hit, but it mattered little as Oregon State posted two runs apiece in the second and third innings, then broke the game open with five runs in the fourth. In both the second and third innings, the scoring started off doubles to lead off the inning. Romero started the offense with one in the second, and later scored when Travis Anderson doubled. Tyler Smith then singled in Anderson to make it 2-0. That lead got pushed to 4-0 in the third. Rob Folsom doubled, stole third, and then scored when Romero singled with two outs. Romero continued on to third on consecutive walks to Anderson and Carter Bell, and scored when Blake Gibbs was hit by a pitch. Oregon State (7-3 overall) only finished with two hits in the fourth, but capitalized on a Utah Valley (4-6) error and a solo walk for five runs in the inning, which gave the Beavers their final 9-0 lead. Bell highlighted the inning’s scoring with a two-run single to left. Bell paced Oregon State with two runs batted in, his first multiple-RBI game of the season. Stiltner threw 1 2/3 innings in his first relief appearance of the season, holding Utah Valley to no hits while walking one. Zane Gray took the loss for Utah Valley and fell to 1-2 on the year. He allowed five hits and five earned runs in three innings of work. Jake Rickenbach, Sage Thorpe and Jason Zundel each finished with two hits to pace the Wolverines. |
